EUPJ’s European Beit Din Convenor

EUPJ appoints a new Convenor to the European Beit Din

The European Union for Progressive Judaism is proud to announce that Rabbi Ruven Bar Ephraim has been appointed as the EUPJ’s Convenor to the European Beit Din, the Jewish law court for Progressive Jews in European countries where the community is too small to sustain its own Beit Din. Whether it’s seeking advice on conversion, adoption, or obtaining a Jewish divorce or any other issue concerning Jewish status or other areas of complex Jewish law the Beit Din can provide guidance.

Rabbi Ruven Bar Ephraim originates from the Netherlands where he grew up in the Liberal Jewish Congregation. After school he made Aliya and settled in Kibbutz Yahel, where he lived for ten years. After receiving a BA in Jewish History and an MA in ‘Mikra’ (Biblical science) from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, he received his rabbinical ordination from HUC-JIR Jerusalem (1993). In Israel, Bar Ephraim served among others the Nahariya progressive congregation, Emet v’Shalom. After that he moved to The Hague, where he served the Liberal congregation ‘Bet Jehuda’, for eleven years and was at the same time employed by the Ministry of Justice as a prison chaplain.

Since 2007 he serves the liberal congregation Or Chadasch in Zurich (CH). Rabbi Bar Ephraim is married, has five children and thirteen grandchildren. We express once again our deep gratitude to Rabbi Dr Jackie Tabick for all she has done to support the EUPJ through the sacred task of convening our Beit Din. We wish Rabbi Dr Tabick all the very best for her retirement and look forward to working with Rabbi Bar Ephraim.
