Solidarity with Dutch Jews
The European Union for Progressive Judaism (EUPJ) expresses its solidarity with the Amsterdam Jewish Community, the Nederlands Verbond voor Progressief Jodendom, their member communities and especially the Amsterdam Liberal Jewish Community (LJG) following the disturbing attacks on Israeli football fans in Amsterdam last night. We are deeply saddened by this incident, and our thoughts are with the entire Jewish population of the Netherlands during this difficult time.
We applaud the work of the staff and volunteers of the LJG to help Israeli football fans affected by the events.
As the Torah teaches us (Lev 19:16), “You shall not stand idly by the blood of your neighbour.” This commandment calls us to act in solidarity and to work actively for the protection and well-being of others. The EUPJ takes this to heart as we continue to advocate for strong and decisive measures from all European governments to protect Jews and Jewish lives throughout Europe. We support the Dutch Jewish community’s request for legislation outlawing antisemitism in The Netherlands like the German government has done. Last night’s incident strengthens our resolve to work toward a Europe where all Jewish communities can live in peace and safety.
